Higgins-New or Old

So it sounds like the city of Peabody will be making some potentially very expensive decisions in the next week. It sounds as though they may vote to put a brand new Higgins on the athletic fields and tear down the existing school. What is everyone's thinking of this? Could there be other alternatives like looking at the school system as a whole first and make longer term strategic decisions so that the city of Peabody may not need this size of a middle-school. I do not think we should feel proud that we have the largest. What are your thoughts?

  2. According to today's salem News (3/31/2012) the Higgins was built in 1966 as the High School.
By today's political logic most of Peabody's housing stock (public and private) should be torn down and rebuilt as they were built long before 1966.

Hey, It is only taxpayers' money anyway. There is plenty more where that came from. We have the lowest real estate taxes in the area. What better place to spend it than for the children.

While we're at it let's give those hard working teachers a rise. $70-80K a (school)year just doesn't make it anymore.
We gave the new Super a big raise with lots of perks.
Come on Peabody spend the taxpayers' money.
Ted make up for lost time!! Spend, Spend, Spend!!!

    Fullfill your campaign promises.

Peabody taxpayers. Did you get your tax bills in the mail this week? Take a good look at it. It is going UP,UP,UP!

    1. Since you neglect to research before posting your absurd "facts," I guess I will do it for you....

A teacher with at the absolute highest step in the pay scale (doctorate and 13 years experience) makes $78,347.03. How many of them do you think are working in our schools? What do you think people with a doctorate and 10+ years of experience in their field are supposed to make? That resume would warrant a much higher salary if it were not in the education field...wake up.

  3. Anon, April 6th

According to 2011 city payroll records:
A well known elementary school teacher, Mrs aNonymous

    Salary $75,863.06 Other (longevity pay?) $4901.00 = $80,764.06

doctorate? How much homework to those third graders get?
What are the school hours for the elementary school, 9am to 2pm ?
The kids are on(another)vacation this week right?
Bad year for the teachers this year no snow days!
I guess they will just have to get out earlier this year (for SUMMER VACATION of course)!
Tough work.... if you can get it.

    1. Since you dance around the subject, let me ask my question again. Also, please remember that for every elementary school teacher making 80K there is a high school teacher making 40K.....
"What do you think people with a doctorate (or Master's degree) and 10+ years of experience in their field are supposed to make?"
      _____________________________________________________________
And to your last sentence: "tough work....if you can get it." Last I checked there was a shortage of Math and Science teachers all across the state. People are not exactly knocking down the door to get into that profession.

I think you should go get a Master's degree in science/mathematics (on your own dime), student teach(for free) and pass the teachers tests (both of them). It's a win-win...you get your "sweet gig" and the city get's a qualified teacher who obviously cares about our great city! Unless, of course, you notice you could take this degree and make twice to three times as much working in the private sector. Let me know what you decide.

I look forward to your response.
